Kintsugi & repair

To carry on is to connect.
Passing on thoughts and connecting hearts.

Kintsugi, Gintsugi, Urushitsugi

In this age of cheap and convenient goods, disposable items are the norm. When things break, we throw them away or buy new ones. Have we somehow forgotten the importance of taking good care of things and the attachment that comes from using things carefully and for a long time? Dishes that have been used with care. Bowls passed down through generations. Teacups filled with memories. When they break or chip, if you just buy new ones, the memories and sentiments will not be restored. Kintsugi is a traditional technique of restoration using urushi and gold. It does not only repair the item, but also serves as a bridge to pass on the feelings and history of the past, and to connect the heart to the future. Our company offers kintsugi repairs. We also sell kintsugi coffrets, kits that allow you to experience kintsugi at home.

1. Kintsugi

Chips and cracks are glued and filled with natural urushi and then decorated with gold powder. Two types of finish are available: 'glossy finish', in which very fine gold powder is used and polished to a shiny finish, and 'matte finish', in which coarse gold powder is used to give a matt appearance.

2. Gintsugi

Chips and cracks are glued and filled with natural urushi and then decorated with silver powder. Two types of finish are available: 'glossy finish', where silver very fine powder is used and polished to a shiny finish, and 'matte finish', where silver coarse powder is used to give a matt appearance. It is less expensive than kintsugi.

3. Urushitsugi

Chips and cracks are glued and filled with natural urushi and then finished off with black, red, white or coloured urushi. The colour can be selected according to the texture, colour and design of the vessel. The basic colours are red, black and white (beige), but if you would like to use other colours, please choose from the colour samples below and let us know the colour you would like in the 'Request' field of the request form. As no gold or silver powder is used, this is the cheapest option. Please note that the colour samples are for reference only. Colours may vary slightly depending on the type of item being repaired and the weather at the time of the request. Some colours, such as pure white and pastel colours, cannot be produced with urushi.

4. Kintsugi, gintsugi and urushtsugi in glass

It is possible to perform kintsugi on glass, but glass does not adhere as well as ceramics and may not retain its strength. In addition, depending on the extent and shape of the cracks and chips, there are more cases than with ceramics where repairs cannot be carried out. Delivery may take more than three months. Please be aware of this in advance and consult with us.

Example reference prices (excluding tax)
Chip

Repairs can be carried out for chips as small as 1 mm deep and as large as over 1 cm.

*Chips are assumed to be missing a piece. (If there are pieces to be attached, this repair will be treated as a break, not as a chip)

Chip of approx. 2mm square: 3,850 yen ~
●Chip of approx. 1cm square: 6,000 yen ~

Crack

Cracks, which can cause leaks or worsen if left untreated, are reinforced strongly and beautifully using the kintsugi technique.

*In the case of cracks, we will repair them a little longer than what is actually visible. Even in the case of cracks, minor cracks in the surrounding area may also be repaired additionally. We will judge and repair minor cracks, but we will confirm in advance if the finished image is likely to change significantly or if the price is likely to change.
*Please note that if the crack is deep and wobbly, or if it is more than 3/4 of the entire vessel, it may be repaired as a crack after it has been broken once.

Photography example.
1. Full piece
2. Chip
3. Cracks
4. Break
  • It would be appreciated if a ruler could be attached to the overall photo shoot.

  • If the piece has broken into several pieces, please take a photograph that gives a general idea of the original shape, for example by putting some of the pieces together.

  • If there is no debris, it would be helpful if you could photograph the area with a ruler.

  • As for cracks, since there are often thin cracks that cannot be seen at a quick glance, we may repair cracks that are slightly longer than those that can be seen, or repair additional cracks after we have checked the actual item. If the finished image is likely to change significantly or the price is likely to change, we may need to check and quote again. Please understand.

  • For hygiene reasons, it would be helpful if you could wash the vessels cleanly. We also check this, but we would appreciate your cooperation as mould can develop in a short period of time, for example in summer.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Can you repair glass?

Repair is possible, but depending on the size and shape, it may not be possible to repair the glass because of its poor adhesion. We do not use synthetic adhesives such as epoxy resin. We will only repair with natural urushi. Please note that we take more time than ceramics.

Q. Can I use microwave ovens and dishwashers after kintsugi?

Please note that the dishes that have had Kintsugi work done should not be heated in a microwave oven or used in a dishwasher.

Q. Are there any items that cannot be repaired?

This is not to say that it cannot be kintsugi, but it is not recommended for earthenware pots or other items used over an open fire. The heat may cause the gold or silver to spark. However, it is possible to repair them. For example, if you want to use it as a flower vase or a cooking bowl, and you do not want to use it over an open fire, then there is no problem.

Q. Can I kintsugi a piece of vessels that are not expensive?

Of course it is possible. We can repair any type of vessel, regardless of its price, and we can also repair any type of Western or Japanese vessel. We can also repair any type of Western or Japanese vessels at Kintsugi.

Q. I want to do kintsugi by myself.

We offer a Kintsugi kit, our "Kintsugi coffret". Please click here to purchase.

Please also check the video, which anyone can watch before purchasing.
Q.Why does the repair take so long?

Natural urushi takes time to harden which means it takes a lot of time to proceed to the next step. Furthermore the longer the drying time the more stronger urushi gets.
